BONNIE LAUER

Detroit-born Lauer made All-American at Michigan State University in 1973 when she won the National Collegiate Championship and also did well in the classroom, graduating cum laude. She reached the semifinals of the United States Women’s Amateur Championship in 1973 and was selected to the 1974 United States Curtis Cup team. Lauer helped the U.S. to a 13-5 victory over Great Britain and Ireland . After turning professional, Lauer earned rookie of the year honors on the Ladies Professional Golf Association circuit in 1976. Lauer won her first LPGA event, the Patty Berg Classic, in 1976. Carpal tunnel syndrome in both hands forced surgery in 1983 and Lauer rebounded from that with her best season, 1985, when she won the Uniden LPGA Invitational and was 16th on the money list. Lauer was elected LPGA president in 1988
