CALVIN PEETE
Cherries are
Traverse City
’s No. 1 product and it was a cherry tree that produced one of the
straightest drives in golf. Calvin, one of a family of 19 children, was in
northern
Michigan
when they were harvesting cherries. Calvin fell from a tree and broke his
left elbow. It wasn’t set properly but it turned out just fine for the
Detroit-born Peete when he began playing golf as an adult. The swing that
arm produced was so laser-straight that Calvin led the PGA Tour 10
straight years in driving accuracy and as a Senior Tour rookie he picked
up where he’d left off, again threading the straight and narrow. Peete
was a 12-time winner on the regular Tour and won in six consecutive
seasons, 1982-86. His top victory was the 1985 Players Championship
against what annually is the best top to bottom field in professional
golf. Peete was elected to the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame in 1993.
