Michigan Golf Hall of Fame Inductees

Cindy Figg-Currier

Cindy Figg-Currier combined a successful, 20- year career in the LPGA with marriage and motherhood. Cindy started her career as a successful junior and amateur. She competed in the Junior District Golf Association winning the Toledo Junior Girls Championship and in 1978 became the Michigan State High School Champion. Later, she competed in the Michigan Women’s Amateur Championship. As the first girl from Mt. Pleasant HS to earn a full ride scholarship, she won the Women’s Trans-National Championship and was honored with the MVP Award at the University of Texas.

Cindy qualified for the LPGA Tour in 1984 just two years following her Trans-National win. This same year, during the Women’s Kemper Open, she recorded her first of seven LPGA career holes-in-one. It was a good LPGA start, posting at least one top 20 finish.

Her golf career has been exemplary, showing consistent, steady progress. In the earliest years, she had several top 20 finishes: one in her 1984 beginning year, then three times at the Women’s Kemper Open in 1986, 1987, and 1988, and again at the 1996 Ping/Welch’s Championship. Her experience finally led her to break out of the top twenty, posting top-ten finishes 37 times: 1989 (2), 1990 (6), 1991 (3), 1992, 1993, 1994 (2), 1997 (6), 1998 (6), 1999 (3), 2000 (6), and 2001.

The ‘90s was her crescendo decade. She posted a tie for third at the Stratton Mountain LPGA Classic, JAL Big Apple Classic, and Inamori Classic in 1990, ’91, and ’92, respectively. Her game was reaching the zone. Then, in 1997, she carded a career-low round of 63 during the second round of the State Farm Rail Classic enroute to her first career victory in a sudden-death playoff.

She was a top 50 golfer by 2001. She had 20 rounds under par and 12 rounds in the 60s (ranked 50 in the LPGA). She carded 176 birdies and 2 eagles. Her driving accuracy was 72.5% (ranked 58th), averaging 238.1 yds. Her sand saves were 43.2% (ranked 52nd) and her putting average was 29.53 (ranked 18th). She has recorded 7 holes-in-one, her favorite being on the famous 7th hole at Pebble Beach on her honeymoon.

Cindy is a role model for girls and women. As a skilled professional athlete, she demonstrates the strength and determination it takes to be a winner. As a wife and mother of 8-year-old Kaitland and 10-month-old Mary, she demonstrates the compassion and fortitude it takes to be a success, a true champion.
