EMERICK
KOCSIS
The oldest brother in a family of 14, Emerick was the first to caddy at
the Phoenix Country Club, a Donald Ross design. which over the years,
has evolved into Rogell Municipal Golf Course on
Detroit
’s northwest side. He eventually was assistant pro there and introduced
his younger brother, Chuck, to golf. At the age of 20 in 1928, Emerick
defeated Oakland Hills professional Al Watrous, 2-1, in the semifinals and
went on to win his first of two Michigan PGA championships. He also won
the 1940 Michigan Open. Nationally, Emerick was co-medalist with Ben
Hogan, Ky Laffoon and Dutch Harrison of the 1939 PGA Championship. He
reached the quarterfinals before losing to Byron Nelson. Kocsis served in
World War II and was wounded in action.
