Michigan Golf Hall of Fame Inductees

Greg Reynolds

Greg Reynolds exemplifies one of our finest amateur golfers at the local, state and national levels. In 25 years of competition, he has been a consistent, tenacious competitor. Locally, he demonstrated his skill by winning 17 Club Championships – 10 at Spring Meadows and 7 at Flint. He also won the Genesee County All-Star six times, and had back to back wins of the Flint City Amateur in 1997 and ‘98, then won it again in 2000.

There are many good golfers who win at the local level. Few take it to the next stage as Greg did, successfully competing statewide. He was runner-up in several tournaments: the Golf Association of Michigan (GAM) Championship (twice), the Michigan Amateur, the Michigan Tournament of Champions, and the Horton Smith (three times), and semi-finalist at the 2002 Michigan Amateur. His persistence is demonstrated by his numerous titles:

  • Twice winner of Michigan Medal Play: 1982 & 1997.
  • Twice winner of the Michigan Mid-Amateur: 1983 & 1994.
  • Winner of the Horton Smith: 1994.
  • Winner of the Michigan Tournament of Champions: 1984-1986 & 1996.
  • Medallist (1996) at the Michigan Amateur, shooting a course record 66 at Meadowbrook.

As a successful state competitor, Greg represented Amateurs in 15 Kenney/ Fuller Cup Matches, Michigan at the Great Lakes Amateur from 1995 to 1997, and the GAM in about 22 Atlas Cup Matches. For his dedication and contributions to Michigan golf he was named to the GAM Honor Roll 15 times, awarded the 1994 GAM Player of the Year, 1994 Boyne/Michigan Player of the Year, and the 2002 GAM Senior Player of the Year.

Greg did not stop at statewide success, but took the next challenge to compete nationally. He played in 8 Western Amateurs, 5 U.S. Amateurs, 7 U.S. Mid-Amateurs, took on the Trans Mississippi in 1989, and played in 2 U.S. Senior Amateurs. His accomplishments at the national level are a testimony to his skill:

  • U.S. Mid-Amateur Medallist in 1988.
  • U.S. Amateur Medallist: 1988, 1990 and 1994.
  • 2002 USGA Senior Amateur Champion.
  • 2002 Champions Tour Qualifier Finalist.

Greg reached the ultimate level of competition, breaking into professional golf, playing in the U.S. Senior Open and the USGA State Team Competition.

Greg promoted golf for 25 years through memberships on the Flint Area Interclub Committee and the Genesee All-Star Classic Committee, running the most prestigious local tournament in Genesee County. He served on the Board of Directors of the Flint GC and the Spring Meadows CC. Greg also contributes to Faith Lutheran Church in Grand Blanc as a youth sports coach.
