Michigan Golf Hall of Fame Inductees
Robert McMasters
Bob McMasters has had a long and distinguished career as a player and
has rendered invaluable leadership to the Golf Association of Michigan,
the Western Golf Association and the Evans Scholar Program. He got his
start as a caddy at Red Run Country Club for 9 years and, as a junior, he
was a member of the Royal Oak High School State Championship Team. In
1952, he was the Michigan High School Individual Champion and qualified
for the US Junior Championship. Bob was Captain of the University of
Michigan Golf Team in 1955 and 1956 and was President of the Evans Scholar
Chapter. He qualified for the Michigan Amateur 12 times and was medallist
twice. He has won numerous titles at Red Run Country Club and has
qualified for six US National Championships including the Junior, Publinx
(2), Senior Open, and Senior Amateur (2).
In 1958, he incorporated the Evans Scholar Alumni Organization in the
State of Michigan and has been President numerous times. He organized
Michigan State University, Western Golf Association officials and the
architectural company to complete the design and construction of the Evans
Scholar House at MSU. He is currently chairman of fundraising for the U of
M Evans Scholar House.
He has served as a Director of the Western Golf Association for 20
years and was the first person from Michigan to be elected President of
the WGA. He is an active promoter of the WGA Evans Scholarship Alumni
Endowment Fund, which now exceeds $40 million.
Bob has served the Golf Association of Michigan for 25 years and was
elected President in 1999 and was honored with the GAM Distinguished
Service Award in 2003. He is a co-founder of the Michigan Mid-Amateur
Championship.
Bob has served on the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame Committee since 1984
and was instrumental in re-establishing the Induction Ceremonies in 2002.
He has served on the Board of the Michigan Golf Foundation since its
inception and was a major fundraiser and contributor.
