Michigan Golf Hall of Fame Inductees

W. Bruce Matthews

Matthews in 1991 was the recipient of the Golf Course Superintendent's Association's Distinguished Service Award,
reflecting on a career as a course superintendent, course designer and owner. A long-time Grand Haven resident, he designed award-winning Grand Haven Golf Club among several other Michigan courses, and nephew Jerry Matthews and grandson Bruce carry on the family legacy in course design with their own firms. Matthews, who was a long-time superintendent at Green Ridge Country Club in Grand Rapids, also helped establish the Michigan Turfgrass Foundation at Michigan State University, and helped launch the golf management program at Ferris State University. In 1997, not long before he passed away, the Michigan Golf Course Owners Association started a lifetime achievement award, presented him as the first winner and then named the award in his honor.
